Dr Tu Nokwe is a South African singer, actress, guitarist, composer, lyricist, recording artist, author, teacher and business woman; whose work is driven by a passion for children, community and social justice. In 2022, she was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate for Community Development. Brought up in a family of six Artists, she initially taught music and dance to township kids, Amajika Youth and Children’s Arts Project, under the auspices of the NGO, theNokweCreativeDevelopmentFoundation.Tu has performed around the world, learning more about her craft at Theatres and also at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. She returned to South Africa in the early 90s. Penned and acted in her mom’s life-story. In 1996, she released a hit album Inyakanyaka which redefined her as a powerful innovator. Produced a Self-Help journal(Journey Of My Soul/JOS – with the 1st African Diary of self-management systems, tools to bring order to the free flowing artistic lifestyle).The Ethekwini City honoured her(and both her parents)with the Living Legends Awards. Currently starring on a long running Children’s Daily show on SABC 1 TV, in ‘mam Sakhile Story House.’ In Canada-Toronto, she was starring as an elder in an African Opera ‘OBEAH,’ and was followed by a DORA nomination for Outstanding Featured Performance; featured in an online collaboration with NAMT(National Alliance for Musical Theatre) for broadcast on Broadway OnDemand. Returned to SA screens, on The Republic, Ifalakhe as the ORACLE(the Ageless One) on Channel 161, and as Pampata on the original ShakaZulu series which continues on Netflix. We’re still celebrating the 60s era since her 60thBirthday in 2020, which subsequently launched online after the covid cancellation of a series of #TuNokweLegacyConcerts, set to launch the follow up #JOYtheMusical Theatre Workshops on TUNOKWE.TV channel; as a sequel to our world acclaimed SARAFINA, (teaching kids how to live from inside).The Nokwes have taken on a mission to extend their homes into Artists Residencies, the Village sites, where the Arts & Life development programs are housed.
